Meara LaFrance Totemic Blog

Andy Goldsworthy is the artist here, although clay is not his medium I found it connected to my piece in way of organic form. I like the way the piece is so awkwardly balanced, the natural texture of the rock and the angles that intersect and collide with one another are interesting as well.

I know this isn't a totemic piece however I really like the forms that have been created here and would love to incorporate shapes and forms such as this.

I found these pieces interesting I like the way that they appear to melt. They flow really well and seem to interact with each other.

Ursula Dutkiewicz is the artist here, I like the colors she has chosen they send a strong message when added to these simple forms.

Amanda Hanson Blog 2: Totemic Form

I grew up, for the most part, along the Northwest coast so when I first found out about this assignment my main source of inspiration came from the numerous amount of Northwest tribal totem poles that I saw as a kid.

I know that for my totemic form I want I want my piece to be cylindrical, like a column. So I looked to Egyptian columns.

I also know that I want my totem to incorporate a variety of animals (some carved and the rest mishima with slip.) So I looked for any sort of totemic form that included animals wrapped around it.(The top image is a Chinese totem, and the bottom image is a carved wooden totem from some theme park, but I'm not sure which.)

For the top of my totem (like a lid though I'm not settled on it yet) I'm actually considering using an obelisk form. For years now I've loved Bernini's work and I've wanted to create something similar to his Elephant with an obelisk.

Justin Lee Blog post 2

In this next project I am thinking of doing something with incorporating animals and human figure.
possibly keeping with the cartoonish color scheme.

Kathe Umaluf

I enjoy both of these pieces by Kathe Umaluf because the colors are accurate to the animal and they are not overly detailed.

Karl Zipser

Cecilia Colman

these to pieces by Karl Zipser and Cecilia Colman both have a very long figure and rough look that I may think about incorporating into my own piece.

 Sarah Saunders

Jack Earl
If I decide to go with a cartoon look for this piece Jack Earl and Sarah Saunders are good references

 Alessandro Gallo
I like the way that Gallo incorporated the ground, as if the figures feet are in the water.
This style of human body animal head is something I was thinking of doing for the project.

Thaddeus Erdahl
The texture of the hair and wrinkles on the face draw me in to this piece. it also has a life like quality that combines with a cartoon aspect.

Thomas Eccles, Blog 2, Totemic

Continuing with my previous assignments idea of representing classical sculpture in a contemporary setting my piece will include a simplified sense of the Baroque sculpture with everyday run of the mill figures, instead of idealized forms.

Meara LaFrance Blog for 465.

Beth Cavener Stichters work really interests me in the way she able to make these animals seem to have such a human like personality. She works so confidently in terms of the positioning of her pieces I wonder how she is able to support these so well, to where they don't collapse. I also enjoy the grey scale slip shes used on the rabbit above.

Ron Muecks piece shown here shows how far realism can be taken within a piece.

Kate Macdowell. I like the way that Kate has portrays the womans' hair here, as well as the way the objects flow from her mouth. The smooth quality of her surfaces is wonderful as well something I will need to pay attention to in my piece.

Kathy Venter.

Tip Toland. Her pieces are amazing, this one in particular gives me more inspiration for my piece. Attention and time seems to be put into every detail of her work. The vacant stare on the boys face really brings the piece to life something I suspect is hard to do with clay just like it is with drawing, capturing the feeling as well as the character of the person you are trying to portray.

Amanda Blog Post 1

These 5 works by Adrien Arleo really caught my while I was searching for ideas for the figurative project. His ability to use lines, patterns, and repeating shapes (or body parts) is just fascinating.

These eye patterns are just freaking amazing.

This figurative piece was done by Linda Ganstrom. I chose to include it because I liked all of the little carved pieces covering the sculptures 'skin'. The original idea I had for my project was to create a bust of a woman but with an octopus and other sea life on (similair to this.)

I have yet to be able to find a name for this piece, or even the creator of it, but it was the first piece that attracted my attention, and convinced me to make my project into a bust.

Heads

I am a huge fan of hyper-realism! Tip Tolands work is Amazing!

Illume

Letter to God

Andrea Keys work is intersting, I like how empty the eyes appear and how droopy the skin is.  These characteristics convey a sense of saddness to me.

Tom Bartels work is rather creepy, although I do like the finish on this particualr piece, it reminds me of metal patina

Kate Macdowell Invasive Flora
I really like all of the detail on this piece, I also appreciate that it is one solid color

Sergei Isupov has a unique way of combining texture and color. I love how the eyes "pop" within this piece

Tom Bartel Red Masked Head
I liked the rough style and the blank stare.

Andrea Keys Bust (Gently)
I like the way that the skin droops and feels very fleshy.

Kate Macdowell Invasive Flora
Her work was all very impressive with the small details and smooth quality.

Mayan High Ranking Woman
I liked the disproportionate torso to the rest of the body.

I like the really old look, feel and texture to this piece.

Samantha Blog Post #1

Sergei Isupov- I liked this piece because I like the use of the people coming out of the bottoms of the eyes.

Andrea Keys- I liked the rough textures of her pieces.

Stan Welsh- I liked this piece of his work because I am really into Disney and I like that he used the Mickey ears on this head.

Tip Toland- His work looks so real it's scary.

Kate MacDowell- I like that she uses the skulls in her work, I think I would like to do a skull head for my head assignment.
