Cups, Journal Entry Amanda Hanson

The artist that I was drawn to the most was Linda Arbuckle, because I'm interested in studying up on ceramic brushwork. I love how she is able to describe plant life with so few lines and details, and I love the color palettes that she chooses for each piece. However, I do think that she uses too much color in some pieces, such as in the image above. (But that is probably just because I'm a watercolorist, I love white.) My favorite part about the above cup is how she incorperated the leaf shapes into the lip of it.

After watching a video of her painting one of her pieces on youtube, I feel like she treats each of them like a painters' canvas (that is cup, teapot, bowl shaped..etc) And how she uses the shapes to her advantage by wrapping her images over the lip, or onto the handle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzwk0hsomjI

This yellow cup is one of my two favorites that I've seen so far. The yellow on the rim, and on the foot, keeps your eyes focussed on the fruit and leaf design in the middle. I also love the soft curves on this cup, it looks very delecate, yet sturdy to me at the same time.

This is my other favorite, because the colors and shapes of the fruit and leaves are balanced so well on it. Out of all of them, this one feels the most like a canvas to me, (partially because it does not have a handle.)

Out of these last two images, even though I like them both a lot, and they look like they are from the same set, I prefer the bottom one, because it's more balanced color wise. I like how she pulled the red from the lip of the the cup, and placed it into the pettals and fruit overlapping it.
