I began this assignment by sketching basic versions of the
dishes that we are required to make: plates, tumblers, bowls, and serving
dishes/trays. Then I made subtle alterations to the overall form, the handles,
the lids and the feet. When I did this
I had not yet researched images specifically for this assignment, I just
reflected on my past work, and future projects I have considered. After completing these first sketches, I
then looked for influences from the websites given to us. I did not find much of anything that I was
looking for, and I tend to be inspired more by historical work, so I decided to
look at the library for quality historical sources. I did look elsewhere on the internet as well, but the only image
I took from the internet is of a Cherokee bowl with interesting handles and
form. The other images, which are from
the library, gave me ideas for surface decorations. I want to carve into the surface of the pieces but it will probably
be non-representation designs with different textures incorporated. I plan to
have a different color scheme than any of my influence pictures. I want one side of the dishes to be dark
brown with an accent of blue underglaze – probably air brushed on. Then I want the other side of the dishes to
be white slip with a bright orange accent.
I will decide how much design I will put on the outside, how much color
I am going to use, and which color combo will be on the inside/outside after I
start working on the form.
